On 5th May, the residents of Worthing elected the first ever Labour council in the history of the town. This victory was the culmination of many years of hard work listening to residents, supporting our communities and all-year-round campaigning. Together, residents, local Labour members, activists and councillors have put Worthing on the national political map and shown just what is possible.

Labour leader, Cllr Beccy Cooper says;

“We’d like to say a huge and heartfelt thanks to all our local Labour members and activists. This victory is a victory for you and simply wouldn’t have been remotely possible without the incredible commitment of our members in both CLPs. When we walk into council on May 20th to start a new chapter in the town’s history, we know we do so thanks to you.

Through months of hard work, Labour councillors and activists held many meetings with residents and community groups, talked to thousands of local people and travelled around the country to build a manifesto for change for our town. And it is a manifesto based on sound socialist principles which we know have transformed Labour towns and cities in other parts of the country.

Now that we have taken control of the council, our team are going to waste no time bringing change to Worthing. This includes:

• Building truly affordable council housing in Worthing

• Implementing a local version of the Preston model of community wealth building

• Opening up the council to the community by completely remodelling council meetings, venues and committees to allow for real local democracy that enables our communities to be actively involved in changing our town

• Regenerating not only our town centre but local neighbourhoods through a focus on developing green public space

• Declaring a poverty emergency and focussing maximum financial support to those most in need

So once again, thank you so much for all of your continued support, encouragement and commitment to our local Labour Party. It will be a privilege for our team of councillors to serve residents and local labour members as we start the work of transforming our town.”
