In a leadership election, each Constituency Labour Party – you are a member of Worthing West CLP is able to make a supporting nomination for one or other of the candidates in the election. It’s not compulsory, but we have decided we will have a general meeting of our CLP on August 3 at 7.30pm in the Labour Hall to allow members to vote by secret ballot on the candidates and the one getting the most votes will get a supporting nomination from this CLP.

This is not, of course, a substitute for the proper individual ballot of members which will happen between Aug 22 and Sept 21.

There are very clear rules as to who can attend this meeting and vote in the ballot for a supporting nomination. These rules, set by HQ, have to be followed to allow us to have this ‘proper’ meeting in the period when Party meetings have been suspended. If we don’t follow these rules we risk getting our CLP suspended, with all the serious consequences that would flow from that. So whatever we think of the rules, we have no choice but to follow them.

In particular, only full members who were members on or before January 12, 2016 will be allowed to attend the meeting and vote in the ballot. No members who joined after that date will be able to attend, even if they have subsequently become registered supporters. No registered or affiliated supporters are allowed to attend the meeting unless they are also eligible full members.

You will need to bring your membership card with you and we will check your name off against a list of members who are eligible to attend and vote. Please don’t encourage partners or friends to attend unless you are absolutely sure they are an eligible member. We really don’t want the embarrassment of having to turn people away on the door.

As for previous meetings we expect a lively but friendly debate which will last approximately an hour when we will take the vote which will be by secret paper ballot.

Following this at 8.30pm we will have the informal meeting as we promised in the Newsletter. This will be an opportunity for us to talk about other matters of interest in a more sociable environment and without an agenda. We will be providing soft drinks, but you are welcome to bring along snacks and other drinks of your choice – although best to save the champagne until the leadership result is announced on Sept 24!

We very much look forward to seeing you next Wednesday.
