The members of Worthing West Constituency Labour Party, CLP, have campaigned vigorously against the cuts to housing related support by West Sussex County Council. The #supportpeoplenotcuts campaign was supported by many people in our town; Worthing will be disproportionately hit by the wide ranging effects of the cuts on residents, businesses and emergency services.

We were therefore horrified to learn of the relocation expenses paid to Mr Nathan Elvery. CEO of West Sussex County Council, to help him move house after he left Croydon Council in 2016. This payment of £47,500 was made in addition to his £190,000 per year salary. As reported in this paper, it has since come to light that Mr Elevery still owned his Surrey home.

There must be an independent investigation into this shameful waste of public money; this is the County Council which claims it has no other choice other than to cut funding for homeless services. Does WSCC see the irony of putting the need for their £190,00 a year CEO to have his housing needs met above those who will be sleeping out on the streets when the cuts go through?
