Worthing Labour have joined Councils in Westminster and Wandsworth to secure an historic victory in the Local Elections.  For the first time in history, Labour have taken control of traditionally Conservative, Worthing Borough Council.

The first Labour Councillor in 41 years was elected in Worthing in 2017, and in the proceeding 5 years has seen an unprecedented increase in seats, culminating in this year’s incredible gain of six new Councillors. Worthing Borough Council is now composed of 23 Labour Councillors, 12 Conservative Councillors, 1 Liberal Democrat and a single independent Councillor.

The Conservatives lost seats to Labour in Castle, Northbrook and Gaisford Wards. The Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group, Ed Crouch also lost his seat in Marine Ward to Andy Whight. The Liberal Democrats conceded a seat to Labour in Tarring Ward.

“This result is the culmination of thousands of hours of work that have been put in by our amazing Worthing Labour Party Members and Councillors. Over the past 5 years, we have spent time listening to our Communities, working with them and really getting to understand what makes this town tick. We realised that our Communities are ready and willing to work with a Council that is open, engaging and creative and that prioritises fairness, Community health and wellbeing and maximises the great strengths and beauty that Worthing already holds. 

So today, we are stopping the opaque decision making that has led to disasters like our current concrete town centre! Worthing Labour Council is going to open its doors and invite people in, so that we can build a fairer, greener Coastal town together!”
